With treatment, schizophrenia is a disease that can be managed, but patient compliance with medications is essential. Depending on severity of illness and body chemistry, individuals have been treated with antipsychotics and therapy and those who are compliant tend to do much better than those who stop their meds or drop from therapy.
Staying positive in the face of such a withering foe is always the challenge not just of the patient, but increasingly of his support system, especially in the early stages of the disease when the symptoms are most florid.
