Why do people insist that things don't work and automatically tell someone to go buy Nix or Rid?I do not want pesticides on my child's head... Especially when they don't work. Use olive oil....it smothers them dead and is easier to wash out than Crisco or Vaseline! Soak the hair..put a shower cap on ... Leave for at least 2 hrs..over night is much better. Wash hair afterwards and blow dry. My daughter has extremely thick, tight curly hair....so those little nit combs don't work well. What I do is give her a blow out and follow with a once over with a flat iron. The flat iron kills the nits. After a few days of touching up with the flat iron they loose integrity and crumble away. She's had head lice only a few times and it always comes from her cousins house. Their mom uses the chemicals and they aways have head lice. Also, I got head lice the last time she had it...I just blow dried my hair and flat ironed it...when I ran my fingers thru my hair 3 DEAD lice fell into the sink.
Think about the heat. It would burn your own hands and those are nits and lice. It's bound to kill them. And it's better than a hairdryer as you can't really get close to the scalp with a dryer but you can pull hair strands almost close to the roots. That's just common sense isn't it?
I've never heard anything about a flat iron killing lice but what TRULY REALLY kills lice is using Crisco Shortening.
I used that on my childs hair when they had lice and it works. This is how I used it:
First you put in the shortening like you would when you put any kind of hair products.
You rub it in, especially in the scalp. You leave it in overnight and wrap the hair in a plastic bag of your choice so the pillow does not stain. I used a wal-mart bag or you could use a shower cap.
Then as soon as the child gets up you use a small-toothed comb to pull out all the dead lice. You start from the scalp and work your way to the tip. When you finish pulling out all the dead lice you wash hair as you normally do.
Depending on the lice infestation you may only need one treatment but if its a heavy infestation you may need to repeat it.

You can use blow dryers with their nozzle attachments on to concentrate the heat to a precise spot in the hair. This way you won't burn the scalp and the lice can't stand that heat.
No, because some might be up on your scalp, where obviously you don't want to put a hot flat iron.
I heard it will, cause of the burn try it.
Olive oil shopping kill lice
No, it will only burn your hair, and your scalp, you need the medicine for this treatment, really. Hope this helps, good luck to you.
A flat iron will not kill lice. You need a shampoo made especially to kill the critters.
Not sure what part of the world you live in, but NIX is a very good brand and can be purchased at most drug stores. It also kills the nits/eggs.
