There are many causes, including taking oral contraceptives, or simply undergoing hormone replacement therapy. Abusing diuretics, laxatives or drugs in general are common causes, but you can never be too sure until you consider your lifestyle and all possible causes.

If you have a condition called edema, then this illness will result in pitting. When you press down on a swollen area on the body, an indentation will result and stay there for a good while after you’ve pressed it. This is one of the problems and conditions that are associated with swollen ankles, so do take this into account if you have edema.

Other medical conditions can cause swelling, too. Arthritis is a rheumatic disease that is able to easily cause swelling and inflammation on all joints. Cellulitis, too, can cause it. This is a bacterial infection of the skin and the tissues underneath the skin, and can quickly spread across the body and cause swelling as well as redness.

Pregnancy is a common cause of ankle swelling, too. Pregnancy causes the body to undergo many different temporary changes, so don’t be too shocked when your body starts undergoing some rather dramatic changes to accommodate for your condition. You may experience extreme selling of your ankles or feet, and if this causes you issues then you need to get in touch with your doctor as soon as you can. This could actually indicate that you are suffering from toxemia or pre-eclampsia, and hence you will need treatment right away.

Congestive heart failure commonly produces swollen ankles, too. If you have a heart condition or have a history of heart problems, then this is something you need to go and see your doctor about as soon as possible.
