Arthritis is a condition that is characterized by pain in the joints of the body. It is caused by damage to these joints over time, and is a major cause of disability in senior citizens above 65 years old. Arthritis is not just one form of a disease: there are around 200 types of arthritis, most of them having different causes. Some kinds of arthritis are auto immune diseases, some are caused by joint infection, while some others are caused by deposition of uric acid crystals in the joints, thereby causing inflammation of those joints having these deposits.
Not all forms of arthritis are hereditary. There is a strong belief, however, that there is a genetic component to some of the types of arthritis. An example of such a type is Stickler's Syndrome. Another form of arthritis that could be hereditary is osteoarthritis of the hand. However, when the arthritis is hereditary, you will be informed well in advance by the doctor working on the person suffering from arthritis, so you can take precautions and care from early on.
