Although it can be a rather scary experience, finding blood in your urine is not altogether uncommon. In fact, there's even a scientific name for the event- called Hematuria.

Hematuria is often associated with a wide range of underlying causes, here are a few suggestions as to what might be going on:

Why is there blood in my urine?

Overall, having blood in your urine is not a good thing. It does generally mean that there is something wrong with your body.

Blood in the urine can be caused by ailments in the following areas:

  • Kidney
  • Bladders
  • Ureters
  • Genitals
As far as the kidney goes, its job is to filter waste from the blood (essentially creating urine). If your kidney is struggling to function, blood might be getting through the filter.

Your bladder is where urine is stored before you empty it out. Any injury or bleeding in the bladder will show up in the urine.

The ureters are the passages urine empties out of the bladder through, and any infection or damage to them will show up as bleeding.

Finally, any trauma or damage to the genitals will also cause a certain amount of bleeding.

Why am I peeing blood?
As far as specific conditions go, blood in the urine can be caused by quite a few different ones.

Here's a list of potential ailments:

  • Kidney stones
  • Infections of the urinary tract
  • Infections of the genitals
  • Trauma or blockages (caused by anything from kidney stones through to tumors)
  • Blood-thinning medication
  • Chronic diseases such as sickle cell anemia or diabetes
  • Hypertension
  • Cancer
  • Internal bleeding
The most important thing to do if you find pee in your blood is to contact a doctor.

Until you do, you won't know if the bleeding is caused by something as benign as a ruptured blood-vessel, or something more serious.

No, you don't have your period, but it is most likely a medical problem that you need to get checked by a doctor because it is not normal.
