The internal lining of teh joint, or synovial membrane, produces a fluid that allows movement of the bone ends. If the membrane becomes inflamed (synovitis) for any reason, for example due to injury, viral infection or generalized arthritic conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, the result is a puffy joint that feels very unstable.
Does the swelling develop when you overuse the joint?
Often referred to as wear and tear arthritis, osteoarthritis is the commonest type of rheumatism. There is stiffness and pain in the joints, and there may also be deformity and grating feeling. Osteoarthritis is particularly common in the elderly and in younger people who have had previous trauma to the joint and is therefore always worth bearing in mind when swelling occurs.
