The internal lining of teh joint, or synovial membrane, produces a fluid that allows movement of the bone ends. If the membrane becomes inflamed (synovitis) for any reason, for example due to injury, viral infection or generalized arthritic conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, the result is a puffy joint that feels very unstable.
