Olive Oil suffocates the lice. They breath through holes in thier sides and when covered with olive oil they obviously can't so they die, and it is easier to wash out than mayo and definately less stinky. The issue is that you have to follow the lice life cycle. I am a nanny for a little girl that has had head lice since summer and we treated with the rid and doctor prescription for six months and nothing worked. Anything that smothers the hair is not a quick fix but if you use it every three days for twenty one days ( a total of seven times) then you should not have an issue. If the chemical shampoos work for you then great but if like us you have tried multiple times and simply do not feel it is healthy or safe to continue soaking your childs head in chemicals then Olive Oil is the way to go. It is really not that expensive (especially compared to the shampoos) you can get the really cheap kind, and food stamps buy it.
Head lice are actually parasitic wingless insects. They prove to be a lot of trouble especially when kids are inflicted with them. There are a number of home remedies for Head lice. Some of the proven ones are given below:
- Take out the juice of an onion. Apply it on the scalp and massage slowly all over. Let it remain for 3-4 hours and then wash. Use it for at least 3 consecutive days.
- Take 2 teaspoon vinegar and mix with 6 teaspoon of water. Dip a wad of cotton in it and then apply it to your hair and roots at night. Tie hair with a cloth and wash in the morning. Use it twice a week.
- Make a paste of Garlic and mix some lemon juice in it. Massage it onto your head at night. Wash thoroughly in morning.
Forget all that stuff! Mayonnaise(not salad dressing). My daughter had a ridiculously bad case this year and we tried nix, the remedy that lily suggested. Went to the doctors cause they kept coming back and that prescription failed miserably, went to the doctors again and they prescribed this toxic waste concoction that has death within 8 hrs as a side effect(we threw that in the garbage after reading that and wasting $52.00). Was told about mayonnaise, bought a big tub for 3.00 applied it to my daughters hair let sit for two hours under a shower cap rinsed a few times but leaves hair greasy looking with a slight rotting odor for a day. Combed out. Kills the lice and eggs. Lice was gone. She went through hell for two weeks before using mayonnaise. Awesome!!!!
Mayo definitely works and so does the olive oil. Another great product is dog shampoo. Works everytime....kj
I know a good shampoo for you to use after. It is a preventative one I use on my kids during the lice season. It is based on the herb rosemary. Go to www.fairytaleshaircare.com
