Hi everyone my name is Dr. Lee.  I'm a family practice/sports medicine physician and I've recently been diagnosed with high-grade adenoid cystic carcinoma of the submandibular gland.  I came upon this site because I was trying to determine how I got this cancer.  All the literature that I have reviewed mentions that this type of cancer is usually not related to genetics, tobacco, alcohol, diet, lifestyle, etc.  I do not smoke and was an occasional drinker.  I'm a rather healthy 30 year old man until this cancer got a hold of me.  I am not a believer that cancer comes about on its own.  I truly believe every type of cancer has a definitive environmental cause.  I began to think long and hard what I did that may have caused it.  I can not prove it but I suspect it may have been secondary to my overuse of chewing gum and mints for many years or possibly from overuse of daily mouthwash.  When I chewed gum, I would leave the gum fixated inside my mouth for 1-2 hours even after the taste was absent.  I would chew many sticks of gum in this manner for years.  I also would use alcohol-containing mouthwash 3-4 times a day, gargling for over the recommended 30 seconds per use.  I do not know if any of the things mentioned is the culprit of my diagnosis but if I can deduce anything from this, its that anything used in extreme (either carcinogenic or not) may have an effect on developing cancer.  I am not saying that any of the ingredients in gum, mints, or mouthwash can cause cancer but there is a possibility that when these ingredients are overused or ingested, cancer cells are more likely to grow and divide.  I'm not sure how many years I have left to live but I hope everyone who reads this can benefit from other's misfortunes.

I don't think they definitively know what causes cancer,  A very high percentage of smokers have various forms of cancer, especially lung cancer so that would be a fairly sure conclusion.  Many other things have been considered such as plastic food containers, aluminum cookware, cell phones, microwaves, aspartame, corn syrup, a diet high in sugar, a diet high in fat, and on and on.  Those are just speculations and based on the facts that before these things were widely used in the general population there was less cancer.  Of course years ago there was no rush to determine a cause of death.  One famous death certificate that has circled the interrnet read, "Went to bed feeling fine, woke up dead".  With all the new information coming as a result of the genome  project we have learned that there are some in the population that have cancer markers and are predisposed to get cancer.  Best advice is to live a healthy lifestyle with good nutrition, exercise and plenty of rest.  And  chew gum but too much could cause tooth decay and sugarless  has all those bad sugar substitutes.

That is something I have never heard of. Leave it to the people whom said if we stand in front of microwaves while they are running we will get cancer. Or of course, using a cell phone will give us brain cancer.

Cavities- maybe. Cancer- doubtful,  annoying to others when chewing/snapping gum hard- definitely!

Since we don't ingest much from chewing gum, I don't see how that can happen.  But anything that causes our bodies to be high in acid can cause cancer, sugars do feed cancers, so maybe because gum either has sugar or artificial sweeteners (both bad) maybe people with cancer should not chew gum.

No, I've not heard that.  Only heard that chewing a lot of gum may give you gas?  Lol  I have heard recently that using plastic wrap on foods you cook in the microwave can cause cancer.  Even the plastic that is already on the microwaveable containers causes cancer.  I am now removing any plastic wrap and placing a paper towel over the food, or taking the food out and placing into a pyrex type of dish.

They do believe that some of the artificial sweeteners are a cause of cancer.  Some gums do have it, but you'd have to chew such an amount of gum to get cancer from the artificial sweetener that it isn't likely.  Everything has it's good and it's bads for you.  So, be happy and eat somewhat healthy.

I don't think this could possibly be true, my father who has lung cancer from aesbestos was told to chew gum to help with the side effects he is experiencing, if course since there is no cure, perhaps they figure it doesn't matter either way. I just think there has not been a child yet that has not chewed gum in their life. I think you are more likely to die from choking on it then you would be from it causing cancer!

Only if the gum was manufactured in China, Melimine causes cancer and it seems that about everything coming from China has Melamine in it, so why not the chewing gum also.

I haven't heard that, but I don't chew gum anymore. I am allergic to aspartame and it seems to be in most gums now.... So if one day they find that it is then maybe my allergy will have saved me. I wouldn't think chewing would be the cause, but maybe the ingredients???

I think they're just being douchebags about the entire thing. Honestly, chewing gum causing cancer? That's just stupid, unless the gum making industries are slipping something toxic and dangerous into the gum base or whatever. Though I do know sugar-free gum has the same ingredient as a laxative, so sugar-free gum is good for constipation I suppose... XD Anyway, all of these myths are really dumb. I don't believe them even for a second. If they were considered cancerous, wouldn't we of already had it by now, I mean really?
