The target of the AIDS virus HIV is the immune system. It weakens the immune system which reduces a person's ability to fight off pathogens. That is why people with AIDS are more susceptible to bacterial and viral infections than other people. Most often than not, it is not the symptoms of AIDS that kill a person but rather some opportunistic infection, like pneumonia, that occurred because the very weak immune system could not fight it off.
