HIV weakens the immune system by attacking and destroying healthy CD4 cells. These cells are responsible for the defense mechanism of the immune system. A normal CD4 count ranges are about 1000, if the cells go below those numbers required to fight off infection, a person can get sick. AIDS is a condition of this process, If a persons CD4 count gets below 200 and has had an infection acquired by this, It is recognized as AIDS.
