I would think it can. Pulmonary is your lungs & embolism is a sudden blockage of a blood vessel by an embolus & embolism is a foreign object, such as a blood clot, quantity of air or gas, or a bit of tissue or tumor that is circulating in the blood. So I would think with the pressure of any of this will eventually cause some kind of damage. But, I am NOT a Dr. So please always go with what the Dr.'s say. They would know best......

May be it can cause...as due to PE breathing become short and rapid...also one may cough blood (hemoptysis). But immediate attention given much damage can be avoided.
