It’s important to remember your current medical state when trying to assess why your tongue would go numb. If you’re diabetic, for example, it could be a sign that your blood sugars are at an unacceptably low level, and something needs to be done to bring them back to normal. Alternatively, if other areas such as the chin are also experiencing this numb feeling you are describing, it could be an indicator that you are about to suffer a migraine. At this point, you may wish to seek medical advice, especially if you are enduring these extreme headaches on a regular basis.

Interestingly, some foods may result in our tongue becoming numb, such as foodstuffs which are highly acidic or spicy. Indeed, if you’ve drank something that’s close to boiling, or you have eaten something that is also very hot, you may have caused your tongue to be temporarily numbed. If this was the case, you need to be careful not to do this again in future as it could permanently damage your tongue and your sense of taste. Many of us wouldn’t enjoy our food half as much without the ability to distinguish between different tastes, and it’s a shame that we all don’t take priority of our oral health as much as we should.

If you have concerns about the numbness of your tongue, waste no time in seeing a doctor and getting a professional opinion. In most cases, they will be able to do a thorough check up on your condition, administering some medication that will get you on the all-important road to recovery.
