A constant strain on the neck muscles can cause the muscles to form lesions or tear. This occurs on a microscopic level. The body tries to contain or prevent these tears from forming by forcing the muscles to knot. It is believed that these knots are formed when the body keeps the muscles constantly active or constantly uses them. When muscles are overworked constantly they buckle under the strain and form knots. Medically knots in the muscles are known as myofascial trigger points. It is believed that muscle knots can contain abnormal protein deposits or they may have an excess of connective tissue. There are several ways in which muscle knots are treated including therapy involving massage and exercise. Changing ones posture is also a preventive method.
