It is a malignant tumor of the soft tissue (muscles, connective tissues, lymphatic tissues, tendons, vascular tissues, etc). It arises from embryonal tissue and may occur anywhere in the body where striated muscle is found. It occurs most often between 2 and 6 years and 15 to 19 years. It is staged according to the sites and the metastasis (Group 1 to 4). Forty percent occur in the head, orbit, and neck, extremities. The prognosis is good if remission is achieved. If relapse occurs survival rate is poor.

Signs and symptoms depend upon the site of the tumor but most common signs are painless mass or functional impairment of affected site; may also include: visible mass, wound which does not heal, pain in area, swelling, frequent ear infections, lymphadenopathy. Symptoms may not occur until tumor becomes enlarged and begins to put pressure on the other tissues in the area.

It is diagnosed by direct inspection and palpation, X – Ray and CT scan reveal location, bone marrow aspiration and lumbar puncture show abnormal cells, MRI shows location and size of the tumor and tissue biopsy reveals abnormal cells.
