Congenital means a condition that is present at birth. It can be a defect or illness which is a result of hereditary or environmental conditions, unlike an acquired illness or disorder.

Congenital disorders are the result of genetic defects, abnormal intrauterine environment or even unknown factors. They can be identified before birth, after birth or even years later.

The disorders can be very minor, like a birthmark; to very severe e.g. congenital heart disease. Approximately 2% to 3% of all babies that are born have some kind of congenital defects.

Cleft lip, Cleft palate, Club foot, Spina bifida are just a few conditions that are caused by congenital and genetic abnormalities.

Some congenital defects can be due to mutation of the germ cells or infections during pregnancy.
