Typhoid is caused by the bacteria Salmonella typhi and spreads by way of the excreta of an infected person. Flies are the main transmitters of the disease and hence in places where cases of typhoid fever are prevalent one should follow hygiene rules properly; care should be taken to wash hands before meals. All food items should be kept covered to avoid contamination by way of flies.

With respect to diet one should avoid food that is spicy and high in fat content with emphasis on a liquid diet comprising of milk, fruit juices, thin soups and eggs. Fried foods and any foods that are not easily digested should be avoided. Alcohol and tobacco should be especially avoided. Also as the body loses a large amount of fluids and nutrients by way of diarrhea, vomiting and sweating one should take plenty of rest and replenish the lost nutrients; any activity that may further exhaust the body should be avoided. Typhoid fever is treated by using antibiotics like ciprofloxacin and ceftriaxone.
