Maalox Total Stomach Relief can cause grey or black stool in some users, but this side effect will often disappear after discontinuing use.

However, black stools are not associated with Omeprazole, and if you have black stools whilst taking this medicine it is strongly advised that you contact your doctor immediately.

Why does Maalox Total Stomach Relief cause black stools?

Maalox can cause black stools because of the presence of a chemical called Bismuth Subsalicylate. Users may also notice a darkening of the tongue.

The foods we eat can also change the colour of our stools, and many foods can make them appear black! If you've eaten food like beetroot, blueberries, liquorice, and even iron rich food or iron supplements, they may be your culprit.

Although black stools can be harmless, they can also be caused by more serious issues, and so it is important that you contact your doctor if your stools are black, as they will be able to advise you further on the matter.
