If you're having problems lifting your leg up when you are in a seated position, there are a number of possible causes.

As with all medical issues, I'd advise seeking the opinion of a professional for a definitive answer. Nevertheless, here are my two-cents' worth:

Can't lift your leg when you're sitting down?
Most people are able to perform the action you described, so there is probably something that needs addressing here.

However - because of the long list of possible causes - it's pretty much impossible for anyone to give you a definitive answer without further details or proper clinical evaluation.

The following might all be relevant in terms of affecting your ability to lift your leg from a siting position:

  • Muscle damage
  • Ligament damage
  • Nerve and neurological impairment
I can't lift my leg up when sitting!
If you're suffering pain when you attempt to move your leg in this position, that is your body's way of saying 'hey, there's something not quite right here!'.

Therefore, if you're in pain or discomfort, I'd recommend seeking medical attention immediately.

If you simply can't lift your leg, you may want to give the limb a few hours' rest before you check on the symptoms again.

Things to look out for include:

  • Swelling
  • Bruising
  • Tenderness
  • Stiffness
A condition called 'dead leg' (or 'charley horse') has all the above symptoms, and is caused by a bruise or contusion.

Again, the only definitive solution would be to visit your doctor.

Lack of exercise, lack of daily movement, injured your leg, nerve problem- there could be many, many reasons.

So go see a doctor if you're worried.

Believe it or not, you may have even broken a bone and not known it/felt it.

But since I am not a doctor see a doctor if it is troubling you.
