Schizophrenia is a complex mental illness that probably is more physical than mental but exhibits some very disturbing symptoms to the sufferer as well as their family and friend.  It occurs in varying degrees.  Basically a schizophrenic loses touch with reality and their hallucinations are more real to them then actual occurrences in their life.  They often hear voices or even see imaginary people that they perceive as real who tell them to do various things to save their soul or to save the world. In a worse case scenario, a Schizophrenic is capable of suicide and even murder.  However, most can be controlled with medication and medical or psychiatric supervision.  It is genetic and often runs in families occurring more frequently in males.  The onset is typically in the teen years. If you have a chance, rent the Russell Crow movie, “A Beautiful Mind”.  It will give you an idea of the profound impact of this disease.  Most schizophrenics are very intelligent.

"It is genetic and often runs in families..."--you are stretching the truth! Research only supports a genetic link higher among twins (and those studies do not control for all factors even when monozygotic twins are reared apart). There is evidence that suggests the medications given to those diagnosed with schizophenia harms the brain and CNS. Reserach has been done on the people diagnosed with schizophrenia AFTER they received medications (serious confound). There is also research in social psychology that indicates these people receive a LABEL and then follow the expected social role. It's just too misleading to suggest it's all about "chemical imbalances."

The population most at risk for suicide are those suffering with MOOD DISORDERS, not so-called pschotic disorders. Schizophrenia still has lots of controversy associated with it despite wide acceptance of this "medical model" claiming everything is the result of genetics.

Arguably MANY factors contribute to whether ANYONE with a psychological problem ends up committing suicide, and not the least of which is the degree of social support the person has.

I agree with you that suicides are probably more related to mood disorders such as depression. I just commented that suicide and even murder is a possibility if the schizophrenia is so severe that the patient has lost all touch with reality and the voices they hear have taken over their actions. The last time I consulted a psychiatrist was with a friend whose wife had just been diagnosed. The doctor told us that it was genetic and often ran in families. The wife's mother had suffered from it for years but her doctor husband had covered for her so it was not known by her family members until the daughter was diagnosed. You may be right that the "genetic component" has become a catch-all and not entirely true. I will look into that. My information is from five years ago. I appreciate your input.

Hi,
a schizophrenic has killed my Mum 8 months before, we still can't go on after that....
The one who killed her was my cousin brother after which he was diagnosed as a schizophrenic. There was no reason in killing so the doctors said he is schizophrenic, was found not guilty and sent to the hospital... Is this possible? I know my text doesn't give you any accurate information, but I still can't believe my Mum is not with us any more...

HI im schizophrenic myself and i have gone trough so many complications before, i dont think schizophrenia will cause anyone to kill themselves if they are on treatment, but because of how severe someone is and without proper treatment it may lead to dangerous acts because people actually looses touch with reality. I think think that people dont really have control of thought or behavor from this condition when they commit something like this. I live a normal life like many pleople,

Are you asking if a specific drug can make you kill yourself or the disease?  Schizophrenia is a disease.  If you know what medications they were using to treat the schizophrenia then I may be able to give you a better answer.
