I was switched to Atenolol 3 months ago from metropol xl. I had been complaining that the beta blockers were elevating my cholesterol especially the LDL and triglycerides. The first test after 3 months on atenolol shows elevated liver enzymes and low creatine levels along with high cholesterol. I have maintained a low fat, 1200 calorie diet while on this ( I'm sure there's been some cheating but for the most part I've stayed in my diet) Could Atenolol be doing this? I'm on 100 mg. My blood pressure before beta blockers was 150/90 but it still does not stay under control.

All meds can cause liver enzymes to spike... Especially statins, and valporic acid. You need to be on a combination blood pressure therapy. Atenolol alone is not going to do the trick. This all depends on your age and your medical profile. I would see a cardiologist. You may want to consider arbs or even calcium channel blockers. But be careful especially if you are a woman to combine a calcium channel blocker and a diuretic.
