A sharp pain under the right breast near the ribs and below the right shoulder blade can be a symptom of a number of different ailments. The only way to figure out for sure what the problem is, is to pay a visit to your doctor. It could be related to the stomach, gall bladder, heart, lungs, ribs, or any other number of sources. Any of these could prove to be very serious so you should have it checked out as soon as possible.

One of the most common causes of pain of this type is the gall bladder. Most often the affliction causing this type of pain is called binary colic. People suffering from this malady will experience a steady or intermittent ache in the upper abdomen right under the right breast. The pain may also very well spread to underneath the right shoulder blade. Bile is a substance that helps the body digest fats and is stored in the gall bladder. When the body systems are working properly bile will pass from the cystic duct and bile duct to the small intestine. If for some reason either of these two passages is blocked, the muscles in the bile duct will contract to try and move a stone. This causes pain, nausea, and vomiting.

To relieve this situation, you should visit your doctor to see if you do suffer from gallstones. You'll be tested and instructed to start on a fat-free diet. If binary colic is the source of the pain, you may need surgery. With today's modern surgical techniques, this surgery is common and you may be able to leave the hospital and return home the same day of your surgery.

Pay attention to your body's signals and take heed when you feel unusual pain to live a better quality life, and see your doctor on a regular basis.
