Chest pain can be caused by a number of factors, such as acid reflux, bruising, rib injuries and stress, and can be triggered or intensified by movement.

  • Chest pain and acid reflux

When acid, such as the acid found in the stomach, flows upwards through the esophagus, you can experience a burning or painful sensation in the chest, even though the cause of the pain has nothing to do with your chest. This type of pain usually occurs in the period of time after eating, especially if you have eaten spicy, oily or fatty foods. A change in diet can alleviate acid reflux, as can taking tablets or treatments such as antacids.

  • Chest pain and bruising

Bruising of the chest can be caused by a number of different factors, such as contact sports or a fall or injury. Although you may not have realized it at the time, the tissue in your chest may have been damaged, and this can cause pain in your chest later on.

  • Chest pain and rib injuries

If the pain in the chest occurs when raising your arms, coughing, sneezing or heavy breathing, then the pain may be caused by a fractured or broken rib. If this is the case, the pain will be in a very specific area, such as at the top of the right-hand rib cage, and the area will be very sensitive to the touch.

  • Chest pain and stress

Stress often puts a great deal of pressure on the body, especially in areas such as the shoulders or back. Another area which can experience intense pressure under in times of stress is the chest - the muscles in the chest are tightened or contracted under stress, which can cause pain.
