My girlfriend has ben coughing for 4 months. First they took blood for tests (not an HIV test), they couldn't see anything wrong. She has just done an X-ray test. Everything is fine, no TB or pneumonia, they can't find anything wrong. But the coughing is still continuous. We have been sleeping without a condom for the past 3 years. I have never slept with anyone else besides her. She has been faithful and I have been faithful...I am really frustrated by the coughing, I'm scared...
Coughing for months isn't a recognised symptom of HIV infection. Early signs of infection can be flu-like symptoms that resolve, then no real signs until about a year post infection when there can be a period of some 3 years of PGL Persistant Generalised Lymphadenopathy (persistent swollen lymph nodes). There could then be a further 3 years of apparently symptomless sub-clinical immune dysfunction, pre-AIDS, accompanied by some weight loss. AIDS proper usually appears from year 7 or 8 onwards
First of all, if you even think there is a slight chance of HIV, one should be tested. But as not to alarm you, you need to know there are endless reasons to a ongoing cough. Best to go get it checked out.
