Thrush can be an early sign, and also occur at anytime in a person with HIV.  People who do not have HIV can also get thrush, which is an overgrowth of the yeast, candida.  Since people with HIV are much more prone to infection, these individuals are more susceptible than a healthy person to contract thrush, and to have it manifest inside the body in places like lungs and esophagus, in addition to oral thrush and vagina, where it most often occurs in otherwise healthy individuals.

If thrush is just an over growth of the yeast candida and not an infection then what's the relation to HIV? What's your source for this information exactly?

Just as people call a vaginal yest infection by that name. Thrush is an overgrowth a candida, which can cause serious illness as it becomes invasive. Its relationship and seriousness in HIV patients is the vulnerability of HIV patients who have a suppressed immune system to developing such overgrowth that 2) becomes invasive and causes some very serious problems in bodily functioning and lead to secondary illnesses. My source is medical training and study, but you can also look up "thrush" on a website for a more comprehensive description.

Thrush is common in HIV patients, cancer patients, babies, and people of all ages. en.wikipedia.org  It is not always a symptom of aids, but a sign of a weak immune system.
