There are many ways to control blood pressure naturally. First, I would recommend against taking medication except as a last resort. Why? Blood pressure lowering medication can have potentially dangerous side-effects, and it doesn't address the underlying problems. If your diet and lifestyle is causing high blood pressure, these factors are likely causing other problems as well. To maintain good overall health you need to address the underlying problems. I have four recommendations:
- Eat a healthy, well-balanced diet. In terms of blood pressure, the main culprit is eating too much salt, too many sugars or refined carbs, and an unhealthy balance of fats. Usually, the main cause of this is eating too much processed foods--processed foods are almost always high in salt and often high in sugar as well. Cut processed foods out of your diet and cook fresh, whole foods. Avoid corn-fed beef and other factory-farmed animals as it has a bad balance of fats. Eat more fish, especially small, fatty fish like herrings and sardines.
- Reduce stress in your life. This is the #1 most important recommendation here. Stress is a major cause of high blood pressure, and it also worsens virtually every medical condition in the book. I have a page about natural remedies for stress and anxiety which you may find helpful. These techniques will be helpful even if you have stressful life circumstances (career, medical problems, family tension) that are beyond your control. Reducing your stress level, even moderately, will result in immense gains in your overall health.
- Get regular aerobic exercise, and stay physically active. You don't need to go to the gym to work out. Try walking more places instead of driving, taking the stairs instead of the elevator. Make your exercise fun: Take up dancing, or play some sort of sport or physically active games. Work in the garden. Try to stay away from the television and limit your time at the computer or at a desk.
- Drink hibiscus tea. Hibiscus tea is a tangy, purple-colored drink, and is safe to drink as a beverage and has been consumed in many cultures for hundreds of years. It has been scientifically shown to lower blood pressure, and is thought to work the same way as the modern class of drugs called ACE Inhibitors--but it is much safer and seems to be free of the strong side effects associated with these drugs.
