If you have been told that you can die from herpes, you have been very much misled. Perhaps you were told this by a friend or maybe a parent who is trying to scare you into avoiding having sexual intercourse. However, whilst herpes cannot cause death, it does have some incredibly nasty repercussions in some cases. Once you contract the infection, you never really get rid of it. Here are some ways in which herpes will affect your body if you catch it from another person:

  • Oral sex and herpes

If you are giving oral sex to somebody with herpes who isn't wearing either a dental dam or a condom, you will chance getting herpes in your mouth, in the form of cold sores. Before you jump to conclusions and think that everyone with cold sores that you know has got herpes through sexual intercourse; remember that you can also get it from other things, such as kissing, drinking from the same bottle and some people just get it for no particular reason. Be sure that your sexual partner is clean before you even consider giving them oral sex, or you may be in for a nasty shock. Once you get cold sores, you usually get them for life and they will flare up when the weather is bad or when you get stressed out.

  • Sexual intercourse and herpes

If you engage in sexual intercourse with somebody who has herpes, with one of you not wearing protection, you can end up catching it too, meaning that you may pass it on to other people in the future. It is always best to get checked as you may not have any symptoms for your sexually transmitted infections, so be sure before you get stuck in!

I personally knew a man who contracted herpes years ago and recently died from herpes meningitis. It took the doctors 2 days to figure out the cause of the meningitis when it did not respond to antibiotics or anti-fungals. He had not had an outbreak in years and so did not list herpes as a medical condition on his medical history. Thus, no one even considered herpes until the labs came back 48 hrs later. Too late. So this is absolutely not true. It has nothing to do with the \"strength\" of the virus, but rather on how the virus operates within your body. However rare it may be, it is very possible to contract herpes encephalitis or meningitis (see: Www.meningitis.org and look up "viral meningitis")  However, this article is misleading in claiming that \"herpes meningitis is not usually serious.\" All meningitis or encephalitis is severe AND life-threatening! If you have herpes and are admitted to the hospital with a high fever or any sn/sx of encephalitis or meningitis, please notify your doctor that you have herpes.
