Cold sores are small fluid filled painful blisters on nose, lips and mouth. These are usually caused by the virus called herpes simplex. There are some other conditions which can cause cold sores and hence require differential diagnosis. These cold sores can also be due to lip cancer, impetigo, primary oral cancer, chickenpox and Aphthous ulcers.
These are few reasons of cold sores other than herpes. You should discuss this with the doctor. But herpes cold sores can be transmitted by kissing a person who is carrier of the virus with or without clod sores.

You can get cold sores or sores that appear to be cold sores or Herpes Simples given the right environment and left untreated or not taken care of by the person.
