Unfortunately, YES IT CAN.  Herpes effects every person in different ways because it is subject to YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM.  Some people's immune systems keep the virus in check very well, and therefore they do not experience much pain or any pain at all with the virus.  Others suffer horribly, and there are many in between.

Some genital herpes patients report extreme pain in the buttocks, hamstrings, caves, feet, arms, hands, and back.  Some even have Viral Sciatica from Herpes infections, especially if the virus was contracted later in life.  We are seeing more 50 plus year olds contract genital herpes and their immune systems are not as strong as younger people that contract it.

If you suspect that Genital Herpes is giving you leg pain or back, buttocks, simply run a course of Antivirals.  Some require 800 MG 3 or 4 times a day of Acyclovir for a few weeks.  If this reduces or eliminates the pain, then you probably can suspect that your pain may be due to herpes.

Herpes is caused by two types of herpes simplex viruses called herpes simplex 1 and herpes simplex 2 (HSV1 or HSV2). Both viruses can cause genital and oral herpes. Muscle pain is not sign of herpes. Herpes usually does not cause any signs but when occur, signs are cold sores in mouth in case of oral herpes and painful & itchy blisters or sore in the genital area in case of genital herpes. So, muscle pain is not caused by herpes. It can be due to other reasons.
